Chemical Equation Balancer
Type the unbalanced equation with an arrow or an equals sign between the sides.
This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.
How it is calculated
- Count each element on both sides
- Set up equations so the counts match
- Solve for the smallest whole-number coefficients
For the mass of each species, use the molecular weight calculator.
Worked example
C6H12O6 + O2 → CO2 + H2O:
- C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O
- Coefficients 1, 6, 6, 6
Why your number may differ
Equations with charges or state symbols such as (aq) are not supported. Remove them before balancing.
Frequently asked questions
How does it balance an equation?
It counts each element on both sides and solves for the smallest whole numbers that make the counts equal.
Why does it say it cannot be balanced?
Usually a species is missing, or a side has an element the other side lacks. Redox equations with charges are not supported.
Does it check the chemistry is real?
No. It only balances atoms. A balanced equation is not necessarily a reaction that happens.
