Rounding Calculator

Enter a number and choose the place value you want to round to.

Positive or negative numbers are accepted.

This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.

How it is calculated

  • Nearest: round to the closest multiple of the place value, with a half going away from zero
  • Up: the next multiple at or above the number
  • Down: the next multiple at or below the number
  • Truncated: drop the digits beyond the place, towards zero

For rounding to a number of significant figures, use the significant figures calculator.

Worked example

3.14159 to the hundredths place:

  • Nearest = 3.14, up = 3.15, down = 3.14

Why your number may differ

Some systems, such as banker’s rounding in spreadsheets or programming, round halves to the nearest even number. This calculator uses the usual half-up rule.

Frequently asked questions

How does rounding work?

Look at the digit just after the place you are rounding to. If it is 5 or more, round up. If it is 4 or less, round down.

How are halves and negatives rounded?

A half rounds away from zero, so 2.5 becomes 3 and −2.5 becomes −3. This is the usual school rule.

What is the difference between rounding down and truncating?

For positive numbers, none. For negatives, rounding down goes towards −∞ while truncating simply drops the extra digits towards zero.
