Worked example
2 hours 45 minutes 30 seconds:
- 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 and 30 ÷ 3600 = 0.0083
- Decimal hours: 2 + 0.75 + 0.0083 = 2.7583
- Total minutes: 165.5
Why your number may differ
The answer is shown to four decimal places. Some payroll systems round to two decimals or to the nearest quarter hour, so follow your employer’s rule.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. For example 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, and 1 hour 30 minutes is 1.5 hours.
Why use decimal hours?
Payroll and billing systems multiply hours by a rate, which is easier with decimals. 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25 hours, not 8.15.
Why is 1 hour 20 minutes not 1.20?
There are 60 minutes in an hour, not 100. 20 minutes is 20 ÷ 60 = 0.33 of an hour, so 1 hour 20 minutes is about 1.33 hours.
