Volume Calculator

Choose a solid, enter the measurements it needs and get its volume. The formula used is shown too.

Shape

Cuboid: length. Cube: side. Cylinder: radius. Sphere: radius. Cone: radius.

Used by the cuboid only (width). Other shapes do not need it.

Used by the cuboid, cylinder and cone (height). The cube and sphere do not need it.

This result is an estimate only. Check with your bank or the relevant authority before making decisions.

How it is calculated

  • Cuboid = a × b × h
  • Cube = a³
  • Cylinder = π × a² × h (a is the radius)
  • Sphere = 4/3 × π × a³ (a is the radius)
  • Cone = ⅓ × π × a² × h (a is the radius)

If a shape needs b or h and it is empty, the calculator shows an error. Results are shown to four decimal places.

Worked example

  • Cuboid 5 × 4 × 3 = 60
  • Cube with side 5 = 125
  • Sphere with radius 3 = 113.0973
  • Cylinder with radius 2 and height 5 = 62.8319
  • Cone with radius 3 and height 4 = 37.6991

Why your number may differ

All measurements must use the same unit. Enter the radius, not the diameter, for the cylinder, sphere and cone. If your textbook uses 22/7 for π, the answer can differ slightly.

Frequently asked questions

Which fields do I fill in for each shape?

Cuboid: a, b and h. Cube: a. Cylinder: a (radius) and h. Sphere: a (radius). Cone: a (radius) and h.

Is a the radius or the diameter?

For the cylinder, sphere and cone, a is the radius. If you have the diameter, divide it by 2 first.

What unit is the volume in?

Volume is in cubic units. If your measurements are in centimetres, the volume is in cubic centimetres.
