How it is calculated
- Gold assessed = total weight for saved gold, or weight − uruf for worn jewellery (never below 0)
- Value = gold assessed × price per gram
- Nisab value = 85 g × price per gram
- Zakat = 2.5% × value, if gold assessed is at least 85 g and the gold has been held for a full year
Gold prices change daily, so enter the price your zakat authority uses. To check zakat on other assets, see the zakat on savings calculator and the zakat on income calculator.
Worked example
100 g of saved gold at RM400 a gram, held for a year:
- Value: 100 × 400 = RM40,000
- 100 g is above the 85 g nisab (worth RM34,000)
- Zakat: 2.5% × RM40,000 = RM1,000
1,000 g of worn jewellery with an 800 g uruf: 1,000 − 800 = 200 g is assessed, worth RM80,000, so zakat is RM2,000.
Why your number may differ
States set their own uruf and some assess jewellery differently. This calculator checks the 85 g nisab against the part that is assessed, and authorities may treat that slightly differently. Gold price, purity and the date of valuation also change the result. Ask your state zakat authority before you pay.
