Centroid Calculator

Enter the x coordinates and the y coordinates of the points.

Separate with commas, for example 0, 6, 0.

The same number of values as the x list, in the same order.

This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.

How it is calculated

  • Centroid x = sum of the x values ÷ number of points
  • Centroid y = sum of the y values ÷ number of points

For the midpoint of just two points, use the midpoint calculator.

Worked example

Triangle with corners (0, 0), (6, 0) and (0, 6):

  • Centroid = (2, 2)

Why your number may differ

For a polygon with many sides, the area centroid is not always the same as the average of its corners. This calculator averages the points you enter.

Frequently asked questions

What is the centroid?

The average position of all the points. For a triangle it is where the three medians meet, the balance point of a flat triangle.

How is it calculated?

Add up all the x values and divide by the number of points, then do the same for y.

Is it the same as the centre of a circle?

Not in general. For symmetrical shapes such as a rectangle, the centroid is the centre, but for other shapes it is just the average of the points you enter.
