Midpoint Calculator

Enter two points to find the point exactly halfway between them.

First point, x coordinate.

First point, y coordinate.

Second point, x coordinate.

Second point, y coordinate.

This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.

How it is calculated

  • Midpoint x = (x₁ + x₂) ÷ 2
  • Midpoint y = (y₁ + y₂) ÷ 2
  • Distance = √((x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²)

For a slope between the same points, use the slope calculator.

Worked example

Points (2, 4) and (8, 10):

  • Midpoint = ((2 + 8) ÷ 2, (4 + 10) ÷ 2) = (5, 7)
  • Distance = √(36 + 36) = 8.4853

Why your number may differ

This is for flat (2D) coordinates. For two places on the Earth’s surface, the straight-line midpoint on a map is not the same as the true midpoint over the globe.

Frequently asked questions

What is the midpoint formula?

Average the coordinates: midpoint = ((x₁ + x₂) ÷ 2, (y₁ + y₂) ÷ 2).

Is the midpoint on the line between the points?

Yes. It sits exactly halfway along the straight segment that joins them.

Does it work with negative numbers?

Yes. Negative coordinates are averaged in the same way.
