How it is calculated

  • Total days = days per year × number of years
  • Fidyah = total days × the daily rate

The daily rate is based on the value of the staple food for one day, and each state announces its own figure. To plan zakat, see the zakat on income calculator.

Worked example

10 days at RM4.00 a day: 10 × 4.00 = RM40.00.

3 days a year for 3 years at RM4.00: 9 days × 4.00 = RM36.00.

Why your number may differ

Rates differ between states and are updated, so use the one announced for your state this year. Whether fidyah is due, and whether you must also make up the fasts, depends on your situation. Ask your state religious authority before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

What is fidyah?

Fidyah is a payment, usually in the form of feeding a poor person, for each fasting day a person could not make up. It applies to people such as the elderly or those with long-term illness, and in some cases to missed fasts that were not made up before the next Ramadan.

How much is fidyah a day?

It is set by each state religious authority and changes from time to time. The Federal Territory rate for 2026 is RM4.00 a day. Check your state's current rate.

Do I still need to make up the fast?

That depends on your situation. Fidyah can replace the fast only where making it up is not possible. If you could still make it up, ask your religious authority what applies to you.
