How it is calculated
Grade points for each grade:
-
A = 4.00
-
A- = 3.67
-
B+ = 3.33
-
B = 3.00
-
B- = 2.67
-
C+ = 2.33
-
C = 2.00
-
C- = 1.67
-
D+ = 1.33
-
D = 1.00
-
F = 0.00
-
GPA = sum of (grade points × credit hours) ÷ total credit hours, over the rows with credit hours above 0
-
With no credits at all, the GPA cannot be calculated
-
CGPA = (previous CGPA × previous credits + this semester’s grade points total) ÷ (previous credits + this semester’s credits), when both previous values are filled in. Otherwise the CGPA equals the GPA.
GPA is the semester GPA (PNG) and CGPA is the cumulative CGPA (PNGK).
Worked example
Four courses: A (3 credits), B+ (3 credits), A- (4 credits) and C (2 credits).
- Total grade points = 4.00×3 + 3.33×3 + 3.67×4 + 2.00×2 = 40.67
- Total credits = 12
- GPA = 40.67 ÷ 12 = 3.39
If your previous CGPA is 3.5 over 30 credits:
- CGPA = (3.5 × 30 + 40.67) ÷ 42 = 3.47
Why your number may differ
This 4.00 scale is common in Malaysian universities, but grade points differ between institutions. Check your university’s scale.
