How it is calculated

For degree applications through UPU after STPM, Matriculation or Asasi:

  • Academic part = CGPA ÷ 4.00 × 90
  • Merit score = academic part + co-curriculum mark (0 to 10)

The result is out of 100 and is rounded to 2 decimal places. The Ministry of Higher Education publishes its own merit calculator on the e-Panduan UPU portal.

Worked example

CGPA 3.50 and a co-curriculum mark of 8:

  • Academic part: 3.50 ÷ 4.00 × 90 = 78.75
  • Merit score: 78.75 + 8 = 86.75

Why your number may differ

Rules can change between intakes, and programmes may add their own requirements such as interviews, tests or minimum subject grades. The co-curriculum mark is given by your institution, not worked out here. This is not the merit used for Matriculation admission after SPM. Always confirm with the official UPU portal.

Frequently asked questions

How is the UPU merit score calculated for STPM and Matriculation?

Merit = (CGPA ÷ 4.00 × 90) + co-curriculum mark. The academic part is worth 90 marks and the co-curriculum part 10, so the total is out of 100.

Does this work for SPM leavers?

No. SPM merit uses a different method with subject groups, so it is not covered here.

Does a higher merit guarantee a place?

No. Each programme has its own cut-off, which changes every year with the number of applicants and the places offered. Use this score as a guide only.
