Mean, Median & Mode Calculator

Type a list of numbers separated by commas, spaces or semicolons. This calculator gives the mean, median, mode, range, count and sum.

Separate the numbers with commas, spaces or semicolons, for example 2, 4, 4, 5, 7, 9. Do not use thousands separators.

This result is an estimate only. Check with your bank or the relevant authority before making decisions.

How it is calculated

  • Sum = all the numbers added together
  • Mean = sum ÷ count of numbers
  • Median = the middle value once the numbers are sorted. With an even count, it is the average of the two middle values.
  • Mode = the value that appears most often. If every value appears once, there is no mode.
  • Range = largest value − smallest value

Worked example

Data 2, 4, 4, 5, 7, 9:

  • Count = 6
  • Sum = 31
  • Mean = 31 ÷ 6 = 5.1667
  • Median = (4 + 5) ÷ 2 = 4.5
  • Mode = 4 (it appears twice)
  • Range = 9 − 2 = 7

For the data 1, 2, 3 there is no mode. For the data 1, 1, 2, 2 the modes are 1 and 2.

Why your number may differ

Check the numbers you typed, because one wrong number changes the mean and range noticeably. Results are shown to four decimal places.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is the average. The median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often.

Why is the mode shown as "—"?

If every number appears only once, no value is more frequent than the others, so there is no mode.

Can there be more than one mode?

Yes. If two or more values share the highest frequency, all of them are shown, for example 1, 2 for the data 1, 1, 2, 2.
