How it is calculated
- Difference = new value − old value
- Change (%) = difference ÷ old value × 100
A positive result is an increase and a negative result is a decrease. The old value cannot be 0. If the old value is negative, the calculator divides by its absolute value, so the sign of the result shows the direction of the change.
Worked example
- From 80 to 100: difference 20, change +25.00%, an increase
- From 100 to 80: difference −20, change −20.00%, a decrease
Notice that a 25% rise and a 20% fall are not the same even though the same two numbers are involved, because each starts from a different original value.
