Statistics Calculator

Enter your numbers separated by commas or spaces.

Separate with commas or spaces, for example 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42.

This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.

How it is calculated

  • Mean = sum ÷ n
  • Median = middle value of the sorted list
  • Population SD = √(Σ(x − mean)² ÷ n)
  • Sample SD = √(Σ(x − mean)² ÷ (n − 1))

For the mode as well, use the mean, median and mode calculator.

Worked example

4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42:

  • Sum 108, mean 18, median 15.5
  • Range 38

Why your number may differ

Use the sample standard deviation unless your list is the whole group. Very large lists may be easier to check in a spreadsheet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between population and sample standard deviation?

Population divides by n and is used when you have every value. Sample divides by n − 1 and is used when your data is a sample of a larger group.

How is the median found?

Sort the numbers and take the middle one. With an even count, average the two middle numbers.

Can I include negative numbers or decimals?

Yes. Use a minus sign and a decimal point, for example −2.5.
