Weighted Average Calculator

Enter your values and the weight of each to get the weighted average. Use it for grades, scores and prices where some items count more than others.

The marks or numbers, separated by commas, for example 80, 90, 70.

The weight of each value, in the same order, for example 20, 30, 50. Use the same number of items as values. They do not need to add up to 100.

This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.

How it is calculated

  • Weighted average = (value 1 × weight 1 + value 2 × weight 2 + …) ÷ (weight 1 + weight 2 + …)

For a simple average, use the mean, median and mode calculator. For a spread of values, use the standard deviation calculator.

Worked example

Marks of 80, 90 and 70 with weights of 20%, 30% and 50%:

  • 80 × 20 + 90 × 30 + 70 × 50 = 1,600 + 2,700 + 3,500 = 7,800
  • Total weight: 100
  • Weighted average: 7,800 ÷ 100 = 78

The plain average of the three marks is 80.

Why your number may differ

The result depends on the weights you enter. Check your course or company rules for how weights and rounding work.

Frequently asked questions

How is a weighted average calculated?

Multiply each value by its weight, add the results, then divide by the total of the weights.

Do the weights have to add up to 100?

No. The calculator divides by the total weight, so any positive weights work, such as 1, 3 and 6 or 20, 30 and 50.

How is it different from a normal average?

A normal average treats every value equally. A weighted average gives larger weights more influence, as when an exam counts for more than coursework.
