Acceleration Calculator
Enter the starting and final speed and the time taken to find the acceleration.
This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.
How it is calculated
- Convert km/h to m/s by dividing by 3.6
- Acceleration = (v − u) ÷ t
- In g = acceleration ÷ 9.80665
- Distance = u × t + ½ × a × t²
For the final speed after a given acceleration, use the velocity calculator.
Worked example
0 to 100 km/h in 8 s:
- 100 km/h = 27.78 m/s
- Acceleration = 27.78 ÷ 8 = 3.47 m/s², or 0.35 g
- Distance covered = 111.1 m
Why your number may differ
This is the average acceleration. A real car accelerates hardest in the lower gears and less at higher speed.
Frequently asked questions
What is the acceleration formula?
Acceleration = (final speed − initial speed) ÷ time. With speeds in m/s and time in seconds, the answer is in m/s².
How do I use 0 to 100 km/h?
Enter 0 as the initial speed, 100 as the final speed, choose km/h and enter the time. A car doing it in 8 seconds accelerates at about 3.47 m/s².
What is a g?
One g is 9.80665 m/s², the acceleration of gravity at the Earth’s surface. 0.35 g feels like a gentle push into the seat.
