Density, Mass and Volume Calculator
Fill in any two of mass, volume and density, and leave the third blank.
This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.
How it is calculated
- Density = mass ÷ volume
- Mass = density × volume
- Volume = mass ÷ density
- kg/m³ = g/cm³ × 1,000
For a related conversion, see the grams to millilitres calculator.
Worked example
A block weighing 540 g with a volume of 200 cm³:
- Density = 540 ÷ 200 = 2.7 g/cm³, which matches aluminium
- That is 2,700 kg/m³
Why your number may differ
The result is an average. Hollow or mixed objects have a different density from their material. Density also changes slightly with temperature.
Frequently asked questions
What is the density formula?
Density = mass ÷ volume. With grams and cubic centimetres the result is in g/cm³.
How do I convert g/cm³ to kg/m³?
Multiply by 1,000. Water at about 1 g/cm³ is 1,000 kg/m³.
Will an object float?
It floats in water if its density is below about 1 g/cm³, and sinks if it is above.
