How it is calculated

  • Service charge = bill × service %
  • Tax = (bill + service charge) × tax %
  • Tip = bill × tip %
  • Total = bill + service charge + tax + tip
  • Each person = total ÷ number of people

The share rounded to 5 sen is for paying in cash. To work out a discount first, use the discount calculator. For monthly budgets, see the net worth calculator.

Worked example

A RM200 bill for 4 people with 10% service charge and 6% tax:

  • Service charge: 200 × 10% = RM20
  • Tax: (200 + 20) × 6% = RM13.20
  • Total: 200 + 20 + 13.20 = RM233.20
  • Each person: 233.20 ÷ 4 = RM58.30

Why your number may differ

Restaurants may work out tax or service charge in a different order, or round each line. Follow the amounts printed on your bill. Card payments are not rounded to 5 sen.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a bill with SST and service charge?

Add the service charge to the bill, then add the tax on that amount, then divide by the number of people. Enter the percentages exactly as printed on your bill.

What is rounding to 5 sen?

When paying cash in Malaysia, totals are rounded to the nearest 5 sen. Amounts ending in 1 or 2 sen round down, 3 or 4 sen up to 5, 6 or 7 sen down to 5, and 8 or 9 sen up to 10.

Can I split unevenly?

This calculator splits equally. For uneven splits, take off what each person ordered alone first, then split the shared items here.
