Capacitance Calculator
Enter the capacitor values and choose parallel or series.
This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.
How it is calculated
- Parallel: C total = sum of all values
- Series: C total = 1 ÷ (1 ÷ C₁ + 1 ÷ C₂ + …)
For resistors, use the electric circuit calculator.
Worked example
10, 20 and 30 µF:
- In parallel = 60 µF
- In series = 5.4545 µF
Why your number may differ
Real capacitors have tolerances and a voltage rating. In series, the voltage is shared, so check each rating.
Frequently asked questions
How do capacitors add in parallel?
They simply add: C total = C₁ + C₂ + C₃.
How do they combine in series?
The reciprocals add: 1 ÷ C total = 1 ÷ C₁ + 1 ÷ C₂ + 1 ÷ C₃. The total is smaller than the smallest capacitor.
Is it the opposite of resistors?
Yes. Capacitors add in parallel like resistors add in series, and the other way round.
