How it is calculated
- Single phase: kW = volts × amps × power factor ÷ 1,000
- Three phase: kW = √3 × volts × amps × power factor ÷ 1,000, using the voltage between lines
- kVA = the same, without the power factor
- Watts = kW × 1,000
To turn kW into a bill, use the kWh calculator and the TNB electricity bill calculator. For voltage, current and resistance, use the Ohm’s law calculator.
Worked example
- Single phase, 10 A at 240 V, power factor 1: 240 × 10 ÷ 1,000 = 2.4 kW
- Three phase, 10 A at 415 V, power factor 0.8: 1.732 × 415 × 10 × 0.8 ÷ 1,000 = 5.75 kW
- A 32 A single-phase supply at 240 V can supply up to 7.68 kW
Why your number may differ
Real voltage varies a little from the nominal value. The power factor changes with the load. Always follow a qualified electrician and local regulations for wiring and safety.
