Day of the Week Calculator

Pick a date to see which day of the week it is, whether it is in the past or the future.

Any date from the year 1 to 9999.

This result is an estimate only. Check with your bank or the relevant authority before making decisions.

How it is calculated

  • Day of the week: the date is converted to a day count, and the remainder after dividing by 7 gives the weekday
  • Day number in the year: days since 1 January, counting 1 January as day 1
  • ISO week: the week number of the Thursday in that week, counting from the first Thursday of the year
  • Days from today: the date minus today’s date

To count the days between two dates, use the days between dates calculator. To find an age, use the age calculator.

Worked example

31 August 1957, the day Malaya became independent:

  • It was a Saturday
  • It is day 243 of the year

16 September 1963, the day Malaysia was formed, was a Monday.

Why your number may differ

The result uses the Gregorian calendar for every date. Public holidays and Hijri dates are not shown, because they follow other rules and can shift by a day.

Frequently asked questions

How is the day of the week worked out?

The calculator counts the days from a known date using the Gregorian calendar, which handles leap years, and finds the remainder when divided by 7.

What is the ISO week number?

It is the week of the year in the ISO 8601 system, where weeks start on Monday and week 1 is the week with the first Thursday of the year. Early January and late December can belong to the neighbouring year’s week.

Does this work for old dates?

It uses the Gregorian calendar throughout. Dates before it was adopted (1582 in much of Europe, later elsewhere) may differ from historical records.
