How it is calculated
This calculator uses a monthly approximation of EPF’s Modified Aggregate Daily Balance (MADB) method:
- Dividend on the opening balance = 1 January balance × rate
- A contribution in month m earns (12 − m) ÷ 12 of a year. January’s contribution earns 11/12 of a year; December’s earns nothing that year.
- With the same contribution every month the fractions add up to 66 ÷ 12, so dividend on contributions = monthly contribution × rate × 66 ÷ 12
- 31 December balance = opening balance + year’s contributions + dividend
| Year | Conventional | Shariah |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 6.15% | 6.15% |
| 2024 | 6.30% | 6.30% |
| 2023 | 5.50% | 5.40% |
| 2022 | 5.35% | 4.75% |
| 2021 | 6.10% | 5.65% |
| 2020 | 5.20% | 4.90% |
| 2019 | 5.45% | 5.00% |
| 2018 | 6.15% | 5.90% |
| 2017 | 6.90% | 6.40% |
The first Simpanan Shariah dividend was for 2017. Since 11 May 2024 contributions are split into Akaun Persaraan (75%), Akaun Sejahtera (15%) and Akaun Fleksibel (10%), and all three earn the same rate. Past rates do not guarantee future rates. To work out monthly contributions, use the EPF calculator; for a long-term projection, use the retirement savings calculator.
Worked example
2025 conventional rate (6.15%):
- RM100,000 balance, no contributions: 100,000 × 6.15% = RM6,150.00
- RM0 balance, RM1,000 a month: 1,000 × 6.15% × 66 ÷ 12 = RM338.25
- RM100,000 balance and RM1,000 a month: 6,150 + 338.25 = RM6,488.25, closing balance RM118,488.25
Simpanan Shariah 2023 (5.40%) on a RM50,000 balance: RM2,700.00.
Why your number may differ
EPF works on daily balances, while this calculator uses a monthly approximation, so it is an estimate only. The actual dates contributions are credited, withdrawals during the year and contributions that vary month to month all change the dividend. Check your EPF statement for the official figure.
