A 50 N push on a spanner 0.3 m long, at right angles:
Torque = 50 × 0.3 × sin 90° = 15 N·m
That is about 11.06 lb·ft
Why your number may differ
Real torque wrench settings include friction and are given for specific thread conditions. Always follow the maker’s figure for safety-critical fasteners.
Frequently asked questions
What is torque?
The turning effect of a force about a pivot. It is the force times the distance from the pivot, times the sine of the angle between them.
Why does the angle matter?
Only the part of the force at right angles to the lever turns it. Pushing straight along the lever gives no torque.
How do I convert N·m to lb·ft?
Multiply by 0.7376. A torque of 100 N·m is about 73.8 lb·ft.
