Work Calculator (Physics)
Enter the force, the distance and the angle to find the work done.
This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.
How it is calculated
- Work = force × distance × cos(angle)
- Kilojoules = joules ÷ 1,000
- Power = work ÷ time
For the energy of a moving object, see the kinetic energy calculator.
Worked example
Pushing with 100 N over 5 m in the direction of motion:
- Work = 100 × 5 × cos 0° = 500 J
- Over 10 s, power = 50 W
Why your number may differ
Friction and other forces are not included. The work you do is only for the force you enter.
Frequently asked questions
What is work in physics?
Work is done when a force moves an object. It equals the force times the distance moved in the direction of the force.
Why does the angle matter?
Only the part of the force along the direction of motion does work. A force at 90° to the motion does none.
How is power related?
Power is work divided by time. Add the time to get watts.
