How it is calculated
For TNB domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia, on the tariff from 1 July 2025:
- Base charges = kWh × (energy 27.03 + capacity 4.55 + network 12.85) sen. If use exceeds 1,500 kWh, the 37.03 sen energy charge applies to all kWh.
- EEI rebate = kWh × the band rate (25 sen at 1–200 kWh, falling to 0.5 sen at 901–1,000 kWh; none above 1,000 kWh).
- When use is above the protection threshold: a RM10 retail charge, AFA = kWh × the AFA rate, and SST of 8% on (kWh − 600) × the base rate per kWh. AFA is left out of the SST base.
- KWTBB = 1.6% × (base charges + AFA − EEI), none at 300 kWh or less.
- Each line is rounded to 2 decimal places.
To estimate an appliance’s kWh, use the kWh calculator. To size a solar system, see the solar panel calculator.
Worked example
900 kWh, 800 kWh threshold, AFA 0:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Base charges: 900 × 44.43 sen | RM399.87 |
| Retail charge | RM10.00 |
| EEI rebate: 900 × 1.0 sen | −RM9.00 |
| KWTBB: 1.6% × (399.87 − 9.00) | RM6.25 |
| SST: 8% × 300 × 44.43 sen | RM10.66 |
| Total | RM417.78 |
At 600 kWh the bill is RM215.98; at 300 kWh, RM65.79.
Why your number may differ
This is an estimate for Peninsular Malaysia only; Sabah (SESB) and Sarawak (SEB) have their own tariffs. The EEI rebate table and the KWTBB base have not been confirmed against an official TNB schedule. Some sources include AFA in the SST base, and TNB has not said how usage above 800 kWh is charged during the temporary protection; here the normal rules apply to the whole usage. TNB’s rounding may also differ. The Time of Use (ToU) tariff is not covered.
