How it is calculated

BMR is the energy your body uses at complete rest. This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation with weight in kg, height in cm and age in years:

  • Male: 10 × weight + 6.25 × height − 5 × age + 5
  • Female: 10 × weight + 6.25 × height − 5 × age − 161

Estimate only, not medical advice.

Worked example

Male, 30 years, 70 kg, 175 cm:

  1. 10 × 70 = 700
  2. 6.25 × 175 = 1,093.75
  3. 5 × 30 = 150
  4. 700 + 1,093.75 − 150 + 5 = 1,648.75, shown as 1,649 kcal per day

Female, 30 years, 60 kg, 165 cm: 600 + 1,031.25 − 150 − 161 = 1,320.25 kcal per day.

Why your number may differ

The equation is an estimate, so your actual BMR can differ. It also covers energy at rest only, not daily activity. Estimate only, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is BMR?

BMR is the energy your body uses at complete rest.

Which equation is used?

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is 10 × weight + 6.25 × height − 5 × age, then add 5 for men or subtract 161 for women.

Is BMR the same as my daily calorie need?

No. BMR is the energy at rest only. To include daily activity, use our TDEE calculator. Estimate only, not medical advice.
