How it is calculated

Height is converted to inches (cm ÷ 2.54), then “over” is inches minus 60. Over can be negative if you are shorter than 152.4 cm. Each formula adds a set amount for every inch over:

  • Male: Devine 50 + 2.3 × over; Robinson 52 + 1.9 × over; Miller 56.2 + 1.41 × over; Hamwi 48 + 2.7 × over
  • Female: Devine 45.5 + 2.3 × over; Robinson 49 + 1.7 × over; Miller 53.1 + 1.36 × over; Hamwi 45.5 + 2.2 × over

The healthy weight range is 18.5 × height² to 22.9 × height² (height in metres), using the same Asian cut-offs as our BMI Calculator. Estimate only, not medical advice.

Worked example

Male, height 175 cm:

  1. Inches = 175 ÷ 2.54 = 68.9, so over = 8.9
  2. Devine = 70.5 kg, Robinson = 68.9 kg, Miller = 68.8 kg (68.75), Hamwi = 72.0 kg
  3. Healthy range: 18.5 × 1.75² to 22.9 × 1.75² = 56.7 – 70.1 kg

Why your number may differ
