Brick Calculator
Enter the wall size, with any door and window areas to take off.
This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.
How it is calculated
- Wall area = length × height − openings
- Bricks per m² = 1 ÷ ((brick length + mortar) × (brick height + mortar))
- Bricks = area × bricks per m² × (1 + waste %), rounded up
To also work out the mix, use the concrete calculator.
Worked example
A 5 × 2.5 m wall with 215 × 65 mm bricks, 10 mm mortar and 5% waste:
- 59.3 bricks per m² × 12.5 m² = 741
- With waste = 778 bricks
Why your number may differ
Brick sizes, bond patterns and mortar thickness vary. Your supplier or contractor can confirm the exact count.
Frequently asked questions
How many bricks are in a square metre?
With a 215 × 65 mm brick and a 10 mm mortar joint, about 59 bricks cover a square metre of single-skin wall.
What does the calculator ignore?
It counts a single skin of bricks laid flat. A thicker wall, with two or more skins, needs a multiple of this number.
How much waste should I add?
About 5% for breakage and cutting, a little more for complex shapes.
