%

10% is common for straight lays, 15% or more for diagonal patterns or tricky rooms.

This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.

How it is calculated

  • Room area = length × width
  • Area with waste = area × (1 + waste %)
  • Pieces = area with waste ÷ area of one piece, rounded up

For other area sums, use the area calculator.

Worked example

A 5 × 4 m room, 1.2 × 0.2 m planks and 10% waste:

  • Area = 20 m², with waste 22 m²
  • Pieces = 22 ÷ 0.24 = 92

Why your number may differ

Pattern matching, grout widths and room shape change the real count. Buy a few extra for future repairs.

Frequently asked questions

How many tiles do I need?

Divide the room area, plus waste, by the area of one tile, and round up. 20 m² with 10% waste in 0.24 m² planks needs 92.

How much waste should I allow?

About 10% for simple layouts, and more for diagonal patterns, patterned tiles or rooms with many corners.

What about boxes?

Tiles and planks are sold in boxes with a set area. Divide the area with waste by the area per box and round up.
