Common panel widths are 1.8 m to 2.4 m.

Advanced
m

The gate width is taken off the length that needs panels.

This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.

How it is calculated

  • Length for panels = total length − gates × gate width
  • Panels = length for panels ÷ spacing, rounded up
  • Posts = panels + 1 + one extra for each gate

For materials on a wall, use the brick calculator.

Worked example

20 m of fence with one 1.2 m gate and 2.4 m panels:

  • Length for panels = 18.8 m, so 8 panels
  • Posts = 8 + 1 + 1 = 10

Why your number may differ

Corners, uneven ground and end posts may need extra posts. Include gate hardware, concrete and rails in your list.

Frequently asked questions

How many fence posts do I need?

One more post than the number of panels or spans. Each gate needs its own extra post.

How do I allow for a gate?

Take the gate width off the total length, then divide what is left by the panel width.

How far apart should posts be?

Match the width of your panels, or about 1.8 to 2.4 m for rail fencing. Follow the manufacturer’s guide.
