Gas, electricity, equipment wear and delivery, as a percentage of your costs.

%

The share of the selling price you want as profit.

This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.

How it is calculated

  • Labour = hours × hourly rate
  • Cost = (ingredients + packaging + labour) × (1 + overhead %)
  • Price = cost ÷ (1 − margin %)
  • Price per slice = price ÷ slices

For margin and markup in general, see the profit margin calculator.

Worked example

RM35 ingredients, RM5 packaging, 2 hours at RM15, 10% overhead and a 30% margin:

  • Cost = RM77
  • Price = RM110, which is about RM9.17 a slice for 12 slices

Why your number may differ

If you sell in a market, compare with competitors, since customers also judge on price. Home-business licensing and any tax are not included.

Frequently asked questions

How do I price a cake?

Add up ingredients, packaging and your own time, add overhead, then add a profit margin. Many home bakers forget to pay themselves for their time.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price. Markup is profit as a share of the cost. A 30% margin needs a bigger markup, about 43%.

What is overhead?

Costs that are shared across your orders, such as electricity, gas, tools, oven wear, marketing and delivery.
