Sand and Aggregate Calculator

Enter the area, the depth and the compaction allowance.

m²
cm
%

10% to 20% is common, because loose material settles when laid.

Advanced
t/m³

About 1.6 for dry sand and 1.4 to 1.7 for gravel. Ask your supplier.

This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.

How it is calculated

  • Volume = area × depth ÷ 100
  • Volume to order = volume × (1 + compaction %)
  • Weight = volume to order × bulk density

To size a concrete pour, use the concrete calculator.

Worked example

10 m² at 10 cm deep with a 15% allowance and 1.6 t/m³:

  • Volume = 1 m³, to order 1.15 m³
  • Weight = 1.84 tonnes

Why your number may differ

Moisture, grading and how well you compact the material change the volume and weight. Confirm with your supplier.

Frequently asked questions

How much sand or gravel do I need?

Multiply the area by the depth to get the volume, then add an allowance because the material compacts when laid.

How do I convert volume to weight?

Multiply the volume by the bulk density. Dry sand is about 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre, but damp sand is heavier.

Who sells it by tonne or by cubic metre?

Suppliers differ. Ask how they measure, and whether the load is delivered in tonnes or cubic metres.
