How it is calculated
- Speed = distance ÷ time
- Distance = speed × time
- Time = distance ÷ speed
- Time is entered as hours and minutes and used as hours + minutes ÷ 60
- Metres per second = km/h ÷ 3.6
To turn a distance into miles, use the miles to kilometers converter. For the cost of a trip, use the fuel cost calculator.
Worked example
- A 150 km trip in 2 hours: 150 ÷ 2 = 75 km/h
- Driving at 60 km/h for 1 hour 30 minutes: 60 × 1.5 = 90 km
- A 100 km trip at 80 km/h: 100 ÷ 80 = 1.25 hours, which is 1:15
Why your number may differ
This is an average. Real journeys include traffic, stops and changes of speed. Use one set of units throughout; mixing miles with kilometers or minutes with hours gives wrong answers.
