Plant Spacing Calculator

Enter the bed size and the spacing between plants.

Centre to centre. Check the plant label, for example 25 to 30 cm for lettuce.

Layout

A staggered layout fits more plants in the same bed.

This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.

How it is calculated

  • Square grid: (length ÷ spacing + 1) × (width ÷ spacing + 1), each rounded down
  • Staggered: rows are spaced 0.866 × spacing apart, and alternate rows are offset by half a spacing

For the soil to fill the bed, use the soil volume calculator.

Worked example

A 2 × 1 m bed with 25 cm spacing in a square grid:

  • 9 plants along the length × 5 across = 45 plants

Why your number may differ

Plants planted at the very edge may need a margin from the border. Adjust the bed size to leave a gap if you do not want plants on the edge.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out plant spacing?

Divide each side of the bed by the spacing and add one for the plant at the edge, then multiply for a square grid.

What is a staggered layout?

Rows are offset by half a spacing so each plant is the same distance from its neighbours. It fits about 15% more plants than a square grid.

Where do I find the right spacing?

On the seed packet or plant label. Crowded plants compete for light, water and nutrients.
