Soil Volume Calculator
Enter the bed length, width and the depth of soil.
This result is an estimate only. Double-check important figures before relying on them.
How it is calculated
- Volume (m³) = length × width × depth ÷ 100
- Litres = m³ × 1,000
- Bags = litres ÷ bag size, rounded up
- Weight = m³ × density × 1,000
For spreading sand or gravel, use the sand and aggregate calculator.
Worked example
A 2 × 1 m bed filled 20 cm deep:
- 0.4 m³, which is 400 litres
- 10 bags of 40 L, about 520 kg
Why your number may differ
Soil settles after watering, so order a little extra. Loose potting mix is lighter than garden soil.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate soil for a raised bed?
Multiply length × width × depth to get the volume. In metres, 1 m³ is 1,000 litres.
How deep should the soil be?
Lawns and shallow-rooted plants need about 15 to 20 cm, vegetables 20 to 30 cm, and shrubs or trees more. Check your plants’ needs.
Why does the weight matter?
Soil is heavy, which matters for balconies, roofs and moving it. Wet soil weighs more than the figure shown.
